Need to remind myself.....

That (un)homeschooling is about letting her take the lead and support and encourage HER interests. Knowing this why am I having such a hard time accepting that my daughter wants to learn to read, now, at 2yrs 4months old? Maybe because I didn't expect this until she was closer to say 7yrs old? Sure I realized she might have an interest before that age but seeing how I planned to take a more Waldorf(ish) approach to her education, I wasnt expecting to teach her how to 'write' yet. She LOVES books, we read literally dozens everyday(which btw is not part of a Waldorf education at this age) she's been asking us to write her and our names in addition to our pets and friends names for sometime. Lately she's been specifically asking us what each letter is, how to sign it, say it, and even how to sound it out. Such as fish fffff fffff ffffffISH. Today she brought me paper and asked me to write various words. We then broke each word down, sounded them out said and signed each letter and then she asked me to help guide her hand to write each letter. Then she took her paper to my mother read and sounded out each word and practiced signing her letters with my mom. I guess that is what this is all about, this is about her not me and I need to just hang on for the ride.

Renee, trust me I know how this is. Kids are just sponges for learning and sometimes are the engines of that learning, even if it's not what we expected. If Olivia wants to do it, go with it. If she loses interest, see where else her interest goes. Every child is on their own schedule and if this is Olivia's, enjoy the ride with her.
